What are must-have items for campfire cooking?
There are a few times when you should always have one hand when planning to cook over an open flame. Being prepared will allow you to explore more of the great outdoors and do less cooking!
- Cast Iron Skillet or Dutch Oven – These products are a must for campfire cooking. They hold up well to direct, high heat, and are nonstick, making them easy to clean.
- Campfire Grill Grate – We love this product, it sits right on top of your fire pit and you can place your skillets, dutch oven, or food directly on top of it.
- Aluminum Foil – This is great to use for meals as well as to cover pans while cooking for easy cleanup, perfect for foil packets too!
- Knives and Silverware – Be sure to bring cooking utensils, including knives for cutting meats and other products.
- Tongs, Spatulas, and Spoons – Bring tongs and spatula to use for your cooking.
- Cutting Board – If you are doing prep with vegetables or meats, a cutting board may be necessary.
- Lighter Fluid – Depending on your level of skills when it comes to starting a fire, lighter fluid may be needed.
- Dish Soap – Be sure to bring good dish soap to clean your cookware between usage.
- Towels, Paper Towels, and Other Items of Choice!
These are just a few items that we always have on hand when cooking in your camp kitchen, I’d add some instant coffee in there too. Wouldn’t you? Or if I’m being honest, I’d just bring a coffee maker! I may be more into glamping.
Tips for Prepping Foods for Camping:
I highly suggest making a meal plan before going camping, then be sure to look over each of the meals and see what you can prep before you leave.
This means if you want you could easily brown the ground beef and then store it in a freezer-safe storage bag. This cuts down on browning meats. The same can be done with chicken as well.
If you are planning to add vegetables to your menu, many of those can also be chopped and prepped ahead of time.
When you are prepping foods for camping, use freezer-safe storage bags and label each bag so that you know exactly what recipe the ingredients go with.
- Chop Vegetables
- Use Prepared Frozen Foods – These can be tossed in a skillet, warmed up, and served.
- Foil Wrap Meats – Store this ready-to-cook in your freezer-safe storage bags.
- Pre-Cook Meats – Many types of meat like ground beef can be cooked in advance and stored in freezer-safe storage bags.
