What ingredients do you need for Onion Soup Mix Burgers?
- Ground Beef
- Envelope of Lipton Onion Soup Mix or Gluten-Free Onion Soup Mix
- Water
- Hamburger Buns and Toppings (Sliced Tomato, Cheddar Cheese, Swiss Cheese, Real Mayonnaise, Ketchup, Mustard, Onion, Barbecue Sauce, or other favorite toppings!)
These are the only ingredients needed to make these juicy burgers. If you need to make them gluten-free, use gluten-free onion soup mix and gluten-free hamburger buns.
How to Make Lipton Onion Soup Mix Burgers:
These burger patties are very simple to make, but it’s best to use a fattier ground beef or ground chuck to make the best juicy burgers. Lean ground beef will dry out faster at high heat. When forming the beef patties, try to keep them around 1/2 inch thick. The 2 lbs ground beef should make about 4-6 patties depending on the size, portion them out, keeping in mind that they do shrink some in size during the cooking time.
We used a fun burger pan for the grill, too. This allows you to easily flip the burgers, but this is absolutely not necessary to make these burgers. You can just place them directly on the grill grates and flip with a standard grill spatula.
Once the burger patties are ready to go, they can be grilled at 450 degrees F. Alternatively, they can also be cooked on medium-high heat in a large skillet on the stovetop if preferred. Also, we love to make them in the air fryer with this Air Fryer Onion Soup Burgers Recipe. The method is up to you, but either way, you will end up with the best burgers!
The burgers are made with Lipton Onion Soup Mix. If you prefer, you can also use this homemade onion soup mix.
Step-by-Step Instructions for Onion Soup Burgers:
Find the easy printable recipe card below if needed.
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, onion soup mix, and water.
- Form the beef into patties, this should make 4-6 patties depending on the size, try to keep them 1/2 inch thick.
- Place on the grill at 450 degrees F or stovetop in a skillet on medium heat.
- Next, cook on both sides about 10 minutes each or until well done or to your preference, at least 165 degrees F.
- Rest 2-3 minutes before serving.
- Serve with your favorite toppings.
Tips for Making Onion Soup Mix Burgers:

- Use a quick read thermometer; for well-done burgers, they should be cooked until the internal temperature reaches at least 165 degrees F.
- Rest before serving – To let the juices penetrate the burgers, be sure to let them rest for 2-3 minutes before serving.
- Do not overmix – If you overmix, it can lead to tough burgers.
- Use 80/20 ground beef or ground chuck – Leaner ground beef will also lead to drier burgers. This means that I don’t recommend using ground turkey; the meat will not be as juicy, but as always you can absolutely try it!
- Add cheese to make these cheeseburgers! If you want a smoky cheese, try provolone cheese.
What Onion Soup Mix should you use?

Over the years, I have fallen in love with making mixes myself, so I like to use this Copycat Lipton Dry Onion Soup Mix recipe to make the onion soup mix myself. This is the onion soup mix that we use and it is gluten-free, please remember that the Lipton Soup Mix is not, so if you need gluten-free, use the homemade version.
It’s so easy and uses ingredients right from your pantry, which means you do not need to go out and buy the mix; however, if you prefer, by all means, use Lipton Onion Soup Mix Packets. It’ll work just as well!
How do you store leftover burgers?

Onion Soup Burgers are ALWAYS better served fresh off the grill, but if you do need to store them, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. When ready to reheat, heat them on a microwave-safe plate for 1-2 minutes or in the air fryer at 320 degrees F for 4-5 minutes.

How much soup mix, and water for 1pd of hamburger.

I would cut it in half, so use 1/2 the packet of soup mix and 1/8 cup of water.

Will these stay juicy if I cook them ahead & refrigerate for later

These will taste the best right off the grill, still good when heated up but not nearly as juice as when coming off the grill.
