Make a fun, fizzy, and flavorful drink right at home with this Italian Cream Soda Recipe. This recipe only uses a few simple ingredients, and you will be able to easily whip up your cafe-style drink right at home. This is completely customizable using different flavored syrups.
My love of Italian Cream Sodas started when I worked my first job as a barista at a coffee shop in town. I have worked in a coffee shop for the past 25 years in some capacity, so I have these Italian Cream Sodas down to an art! This is the original recipe that we used at the coffee shop. I make this drink every single night, paired alongside my nightly popcorn, and my evening is all set.

What is an Italian Cream Soda?
An Italian cream soda is a refreshing drink made by combining carbonated water or clear soda (Sprite, Club Soda, or Seltzer), flavored syrup, and a splash of heavy cream or half and half, served over ice. It is loved for its creamy texture and endless variety of fruit flavors.
Why you’ll love this Easy Drink Recipe
- Only takes a minute to make!
- Naturally gluten-free, making it versatile.
- Easy to customize with a variety of different flavored syrups.
- Budget-friendly, it costs a fraction of what you’d pay at your local coffee shop.
- No special ingredients or equipment needed, just a cup of ice and a spoon for stirring.
Ingredient Notes

- Flavored Syrups (Raspberry, Strawberry, Orange, Cherry, or your Choice!) – Our favorite brand is Skinny Syrups for sugar-free options. Other brands like Torani will be very similar to what you’d have at your local coffee shop.
- Sprite – This can be made with Sprite, Sprite Zero, Club Soda, or Seltzer Water to give a carbonated, bubbly taste. It’s best made chilled. (Skip the Starry and 7-Up, they do not work!)
- Half and Half (Half Milk Half Cream) or Heavy Cream – This gives the drink a signature “cream” factor. I use half-and-half for a lighter option.
- Whipped Cream – A must for a creamy topping!
How to Make an Italian Cream Soda

- Fill the cup with ice.
- Add about 2 Tbsp of syrup to the cup, or to your taste. This will typically fill up about 1/3 of the cup.
- Evenly fill the rest of the cup with cream and soda evenly about 1/3 each to finish filling the cup.
- Stir and add whipped cream if you prefer.
- Serve.
Sprite, Club Soda, Carbonated Water, or Seltzer Water will work for these. Do not use 7-Up or Starry; it does not work well, and the flavor will not be the same.
Expert Tips for Italian Cream Soda

Trust me…I’ve been making these for more than 25 years! That’s a long time to perfect a drink.
- Use sugar-free syrups for a lighter option, such as Skinny Syrups.
- Try fun flavors like coconut, peach, or blue raspberry.
- Add a splash of vanilla extract for extra depth.
- Make it festive by using holiday-themed syrups or sprinkles.
- Always add whipped cream and a maraschino cherry or strawberry on top if you prefer.
- Pair it with fresh fruit and a fun straw.
- If you want to make Italian Sodas, make them the same way but without the cream!
Variations and Substitutions

- Dairy Free – Try it with full-fat canned coconut milk or creamy oat milk; this WILL alter the flavor, so tread lightly! If you are used to dairy-free products, then you will likely still enjoy it!
- Sugar-Free – Use sugar-free syrups and Sprite Zero or Seltzer Water to make this a low-calorie drink.
- Flavor Mashups – Get creative with the flavors, make cranberry orange, wildberry, blue raspberry, or creamsicle with orange and vanilla!
Frequently Asked Questions

Flavored Syrups can be found on Amazon, Walmart, or at a restaurant store. The best place I have found to purchase them, though, is at Marshalls or T.J. Maxx. They always have plenty of them, and our personal favorite is these Skinny Syrups on Amazon! Torani Syrups have a wide variety as well, and sugar-free options too.
If you prefer, you could even make your homemade fruit syrups, too.
Skinny Syrups can sometimes be found at Marshalls or T.J. Maxx, too, so always check there. They are sugar-free, and I use them every single day for Italian Cream Sodas and Iced Lattes.
If you enjoy this fizzy drink, be sure to check out this pink drink.
Our favorite flavors are orange, strawberry, and raspberry. The orange tastes like a creamsicle, so if you enjoy Creamsicles, then you will love the orange flavor. It is very easy, though, to use your favorite flavors and get creative.
If you want to make it tropical, go with pineapple, mango, lime, or coconut. It could even be garnished with fresh pineapple.
I typically always get Raspberry Italian Cream Sodas, but I’ll admit that I am leaning toward the orange. Wildberry Italian Cream Sodas are also perfect, this is using an equal amount of Raspberry and Strawberry. There are endless possibilities to mix and match flavorings. The kids will love making these on a hot summer day or just as a fun party drink.
Italian Cream Sodas are best when made to order, so do not make more than you need. They need to be consumed quickly after making them or stirred together again if they sit too long.
An Italian Soda is flavored syrup and the club soda or carbonated water. An Italian Cream Soda adds a splash of cream to create a rich, creamy texture.
Milk is too thin for these sodas; it’s best to use half and half or heavy cream.
What to Serve with Italian Cream Sodas

Make these as a tasty drink to go with some of your favorite grilled recipes or weeknight staples.
Storage Tips

Italian Cream Sodas are best served fresh. They do not last when made in advance, so they are the perfect made-to-order soda recipe. Keep all the individual components in the pantry and fridge.
Italian Cream Soda is the perfect drink for any special occasion, party, or simply your evening treat. Get creative and try out a few flavors and decide which one you like best. No coffee shop is required for this delicious drink!
Be sure to try these Iced Mocha too, you’ll be an at-home barista in no time!

Lol! I accidentally pressed done on my last comment. I tried the Italian cream soda with raspberry syrup and it was Soo good! I usually get a raspberry Italian cream soda at Dutch Bros and it’s so nice to be able to make it from home! They the exact same!!! A good place to find the syrup is also cash and carry/ smart food service. I found club soda, half and half, and every single flavor of flavored syrup imaginable. They also had a huge freezer with a huge variety of whipped creams next to the half and half. I would rate this 10/10 and I would definitely recommend this to anyone! (Make sure you use exact measurements or get a close estimate or it won’t taste the same)

This looks good! Curious- why doesn’t 7-up work?
Mommy Hates Cooking says
The flavoring of the 7-Up and the carbonation level just does not mix well with the Italian Soda. It will not taste right. The sprite has a good mix of lemon and lime and 7-up is more of a citrus/lemon only flavor.

I’m a little late seeing this, if you have a World Market near you they have flavored syrups also sugar-free. I offered Italian sodas for my son’s High School graduation party. They were a big hit.
