This recipe was given to me by my sister, who is a true lover of all things chocolate. Her recipe actually uses cinnamon sticks instead of candy canes; however, we had a large stash of candy canes and it is the season for peppermint hot chocolate!
Peppermint Hot Chocolate
Ingredients
- 1/4 Cup Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
- 1/4 Cup Sugar
- 1/2 Tsp Ground Cinnamon
- 1/8 Tsp Salt
- 1/2 Cup Water
- 3 1/2 Cups Milk
- 1 Tsp Vanilla Extract
- 1/2 Tsp Almond Extract
- 4 Peppermint Candy Canes
Instructions
- Using a small saucepan cooking on medium heat, add the cocoa, sugar, cinnamon, salt and water. Cook until the mixture is smooth, about 5 minutes. Pour in the milk and reduce heat to simmer for 5 minutes. Stir in the vanilla and almond extracts. Whip the hot chocolate until it becomes foamy. Pour into a mug and add the candy cane.
I made this right after the holidays and had a stash of candy canes to use. I felt like the candy cane made the hot chocolate delicious! It was just enough peppermint without being to strong, which for me made it perfect. I will be drinking this often until I run out of all the leftover candy canes!
Enjoy!
This sounds like the perfect way to end this day! They are calling for more snow and I’m thinking this drink is on the menu!
We have been using the instant hot choc mix and stirring in 1 of the candy cane Hershey kisses we got at Christmas. They give it a delicious flavor and melt right away.
I do that a lot too!! Especially at work!! Perfect treat 🙂
