Peppermint Hot Chocolate
This recipe was given to me by my sister, who is a true lover of all things chocolate. Her recipe actually uses cinnamon sticks instead of candy canes; however, we had a large stash of candy canes and it is the season for peppermint hot chocolate!
- 1/4 Cup Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
- 1/4 Cup Sugar
- 1/2 Tsp Ground Cinnamon
- 1/8 Tsp Salt
- 1/2 Cup Water
- 3 1/2 Cups Milk
- 1 Tsp Vanilla Extract
- 1/2 Tsp Almond Extract
- 4 Peppermint Candy Canes
Using a small saucepan cooking on medium heat, add the cocoa, sugar, cinnamon, salt and water. Cook until the mixture is smooth, about 5 minutes. Pour in the milk and reduce heat to simmer for 5 minutes. Stir in the vanilla and almond extracts. Whip the hot chocolate until it becomes foamy. Pour into a mug and add the candy cane.
I made this right after the holidays and had a stash of candy canes to use. I felt like the candy cane made the hot chocolate delicious! It was just enough peppermint without being to strong, which for me made it perfect. I will be drinking this often until I run out of all the leftover candy canes!
