Use a variety of seasonings to make a flavorful meatball with these Baked Gluten Free Meatballs with Oatmeal, this easy recipe is perfect for a weeknight dinner!
Meatballs have always been a staple when it comes to weeknight dinners, nestled in a hearty bowl of pasta, or as a party appetizer, meatballs are a versatile and beloved dish.
For those who follow a gluten-free lifestyle, finding delicious alternatives can sometimes be challenging, but not anymore! I’ve got you covered as we explore a satisfying recipe for gluten-free meatballs with a twist – incorporating the goodness of oatmeal.
The alternative for meatballs typically uses bread crumbs or crackers, in this case, we will focus on oats.
What type of Oatmeal should you use for Gluten-Free Meatballs?
Oats themselves are technically gluten-free; however, cross-contamination is a common concern. Oats are often processed in facilities that also handle wheat, barley, and rye – grains that contain gluten.
This cross-contamination can occur during harvesting, transportation, and processing, which is why oats being gluten-free is so controversial.
To ensure oats are gluten-free, it’s essential to look for certified gluten-free oats. These oats are grown and processed in dedicated facilities, minimizing the risk of cross contamination. Gluten-free certification ensures that the oats meet strict standards for gluten content.
It’s crucial to choose certified gluten-free oats to avoid any adverse reactions. Always check product labels and opt for reputable brands that prioritize gluten-free practices in their production.
For this particular recipe, I suggest Bob’s Red Mill Old Fashioned Rolled Oats. These oats are readily found at your local grocery store along with Walmart and Target. I do suggest using old-fashioned rolled oats over quick oats too.
Tips for Making Gluten-Free Meatballs with Oatmeal:
The first step will be preheating your oven to 350 degrees F. Then, while the oven is preheating it’s time to make the perfect gluten-free meatball.
It’s best to use a cookie sheet or large baking sheet that is lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat to place the meatballs on. The prepared baking sheet can be set aside.
In a medium-sized bowl, combine your gluten-free oats and milk. In a separate large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef Italian Seasoning, onion powder, salt, minced garlic, Paprika, ground black pepper, and Worcestershire Sauce. This combination will provide the best flavor for your meatballs.
Carefully, add the oats and milk into the mixing bowl with the beef along with the Parmigiano Cheese. Once this is well mixed it’s time to make the best meatballs.
I suggest using a cookie scoop that is about 1 1/2 tablespoons, scoop the meatball mixture into balls, and place the raw meatballs on the prepared baking sheet. The cookie scoop will allow you to get the perfect round ball.
Once your meatballs are prepared, they will bake in the oven for about 20-25 minutes until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees F. This can be checked by using a meat thermometer.
This recipe makes a large batch of 23 meatballs, but the great part is that you can easily freeze them for later too or use them in a variety of meals like meatball subs.
