Let me start by saying that I love trail mix, really I love it! The only problem is that when I go to buy it at the store first I notice how expensive it is and secondly I notice that there is always something in it that I am allergic to. I am one of those odd people that can tolerate peanuts but not tree nuts!
It seems every trail mix I find at the store has tree nuts in it. So, what’s the next best thing? Make your own! Actually, that’s probably the best thing because you can make it to accommodate your taste. Did I also mention it is much cheaper to make your own than store bought? I really cannot figure out why trail mix cost so much at the store!
I mean all the ingredients are less than a $1 to go into the trail mix and you only use small amounts then you go to the store and get a tiny bag for $4-5. I just can’t do it! I will say there is black and white trail mix at Target and it’s delicious but again…I’m too cheap to buy it!
Now, what do you love in your trail mix? I’m writing out the recipe for you but feel free to adapt what goes in it plus the amounts depending on what you like. I won’t lie, extra chocolate goes into mine every time! I have a little boy who eats the chocolate out, so if I want any…I better put extra! So, for this recipe there are no amounts because it completely depends on how much you like. I make enough to make about 4 cups of trail mix.
Another thing I love to add are Sunflower nuts (sunflower seeds without the shell). Sunflower nuts bring an extra bit of salty crunch to the trail mix! Then, there is the dried fruit. I typically go for what’s on sale and always stick to raisins as a staple in mine. This particular time I went with some Apricots too!
This is one of my favorites, perfectly salty and sweet with crunch!
