The planting has begun! Well, I should say the onions were planted and that’s about it! We are hoping to get potatoes in soon; however, life has taken over a bit as well as the weather. I hope that spring comes back next week and we can get back out in the garden again.
I am very anxious to get my herb garden growing again! I have to say it really hurts me to purchase herbs from the store when I could easily walk outside and cut my own for dinner. I’m ready for that time again.
This past week, we also put a fence up around the garden to keep our lovable lab out! She says ‘Hi, Friends’! Guess what? She’s so smart she managed to get in the fence, but so not smart and could not figure out how to get back out! So, we were calling for her to come in one evening and instead of running to the door, she’s in the middle of the garden just relaxing in the dirt. That is after she pulled up some of the onions.
What does this mean? We will be building a better fence.
Last year, she was really in love with tomatoes. We would constantly look outside and she was chomping down on another tomato.
The year before, she would eat all the pears from our pear tree…let me just say those did not go so well with her stomach.
My husband is also about to get manure to get the garden fertilized with…that just sounds delightful doesn’t it? I can already see it now as I go outside and sit on my backyard to smell that fresh spring air only mine is tainted with manure. Yuck.
I’ll pass…
He doesn’t agree though, apparently our garden needs it. Guess I’ve lost that argument.
Now on to this upcoming week, we are hoping that we can get more ready to plant as the weather starts to change permanently. Along with planting the garden, we are also working on our front flower beds. We have one huge spot where we need to find a bench or bird bath to go there so garage sales are in my future!
I really hope to find an old bench or bird bath I can paint and make it look a little funky!
Have you got your list of items ready to plant? Again I note…our ‘we’ is more of a ‘my husband’…I am not a dirt fan. I should say dirt, I’m okay with…what lives in the dirt, not so much.
Happy Gardening!

We rented a tiller on sunday and did a 30 x 30 garden with a chicken wire fence! I have corn, lettuce, snow peas, romas, cherry tomatoes, beef steak tomatoes, beans, zucchini, yellow squash, cubanelles, red peppers, cucumbers, carrots, green onions and a few herbs. I have marigolds to plant around the edges and a few of the above things left to plant. It’s our first garden so my fingers are crossed majority comes up! We added 25 bags of manure and top soil and it doesn’t smell so I think you will be fine.
Oh good to know on the manure lol!! Good luck to you all on your garden! Sounds like you are off to a great start!
