Many of us all love our morning coffee and especially those fancy lattes and cappuccinos, like caramel lattes. Since I work from home and do not live near a local coffee shop, many times I want to make mine at home. Luckily, I can make just about every coffee drink you would want so I can easily make my own!
Most people go into a coffee shop and think the drinks are complicated, but they aren’t! Each drink basically has the same base with just a few minor changes. My first job was at a coffee shop and I worked there for a long time, but on my first day I remember being completely overwhelmed. A co-worker made me flash cards to learn all the drinks, pretty soon though I had it down and could do them in my sleep. Now over 10 years later, I still remember them all!
Today, I thought I would share with you how to make a caramel latte. Now, keep in mind that although I’m showing you a caramel latte, this is how you would make any flavored latte. They are all the same just add your favorite flavor.
I’m going to show this using the espresso machine; however, I’ll also let you know how to do this with your everyday coffee pot.
First, you want to fill your cup with the flavoring. I like to fill mine up about 1/4 inch high into the cup. This will vary based on how sweet you want your drink.
Next, we are going to make the espresso, you will want to do this as instructed on your espresso maker. For me, I typically go with 1-2 shots depending on how awake I am in the mornings, which usually I’m in the morning zombie fashion.
While my espresso is brewing, I typically start steaming the milk. I use a steaming pitcher and the steaming wand. It’s also wise to use a thermometer to monitor the temperature too. The majority of coffee shops will heat the milk to 140*. Here I am in this picture steaming the milk, I did not think that one through either. Taking a picture of yourself steaming hot milk isn’t a wise idea, I do not suggest trying that one at home!
Here is another helpful tip, when you are making a latte, there is very little foam. That is the difference between the latte and cappuccino.
The cappuccino can have 1/3 foam or more, the latte is more milk. Now, when you steam the milk for a latte keep the wand lower into the milk, do not scathe the top or you will create more foam.
Once the milk is heated and your espresso is done you are ready to make your drink. At this point you have your flavor, now pour in your espresso shots, and then use a spatula to hold back any foam and top the rest of the cup off with milk.
I like to let just a tiny topping of foam pour in on the top. Now, stir up the caramel or the flavor on the bottom and drink up.
For those of you who do not have an espresso machine, simply add in the flavoring, use regular coffee and heat some milk in the microwave. At this point, you will be making a latte similar to a Cafe au Lait, but it will still have the same great taste! The espresso is a stronger based coffee which is a major difference in using the espresso machine.
