If you’re looking for that iconic, icy crunch of a drive-in treat without leaving your kitchen, these Sonic Slushies are the ultimate summer hack. We’ve all had those busy afternoons where the kids want a treat or to do something fun. This is going to be your go-to for all that fun, and it’s literally less than 25 cents to make.
Making homemade slushies is surprisingly easy and much more budget-friendly than a trip to the drive-in. I’ve made these a dozen times for pool days and parties, and they are the first thing to disappear. Throughout those childhood years, we’d have kids over to swim, then follow it up with a homemade slushie, and you’d have thought they’d won the lottery. All you need is a good blender and two basic ingredients to get that perfect texture at home.

What is a Sonic Slushie or Homemade Slushie?
Sonic slushies are a popular frozen treat made with flavored syrup and crushed ice, known for their distinct slushy consistency. This homemade version recreates the same experience, using a drink mix (Kool-Aid), ice, water, and sugar to make a pourable frozen drink that stays slushy longer!
Why you’ll love these Homemade Slushies

- Ready in less than 5 minutes.
- Easy ingredients that you already have on hand.
- Naturally gluten-free, allergy-free!
- Mix and match with your favorite flavors.
- Cost less than $1 to make for a crowd of kids.
- Nostalgic and perfect summertime treat.
Ingredient Notes

- Ice Cold Water – Cold water works the best to help the blender move without melting the ice too quickly.
- Ice – Use standard ice cubes from your freezer, they’ll blend to the perfect consistency.
- Granulated Sugar – Provides the sweetness to the drink and helps with the slushy consistency. Alternative low-calorie sweeteners can also be used.
- Drink Mix such as Kool-Aid Powder – One unsweetened packet of your favorite Kool,-Aid flavor such as Cherry, Blue Raspberry, or our favorite…Grape!)
Step-by-Step Instructions to Make Homemade Slushies
- Add ice, ice-cold water, sugar, and Kool-Aid.
- Pulse and blend for 20-30 seconds until smooth.
- Pour immediately into glasses or add candy mix-ins.
- Serve.
Tips for the Best Slushies

- Don’t skip the sugar – it is a sugary drink or a “treat” and the sugar is necessary not only for flavor, but it lowers the freezing point of the water and makes the slush a “slushie”. Alternatives like Splenda can be used too.
- Blender secrets – If your blender needs a boost, add 1/4 cup of water.
- Sonic style – Use pebble ice or nugget ice to get the exact, authentic texture; however, our kids have never complained about standard ice cubes.
- Ice Cold Water – Make sure you use ice cold water, not warm or lukewarm.
- Add candy – Add some Nerds or gummy worms just like they do at Sonic.
Variations of Homemade Slushies

- Make it sugar-free by using Splenda or a low-calorie sweetener.
- Add in candy like they do at Sonic or for a better-for-you option, real fruit.
- Get creative with the flavors, use any flavor of Kool-Aid, or combine flavors.
Sonic Cream Slush Recipe
- Make it a cream slush by adding in half and half or heavy cream; just a tiny splash will turn it into a Sonic Cream Slush! This gives you an easy way to turn that cold slushy into a creamy slushy.

This is so fun! And so much cheaper. 🙂 I also like the idea that you can control the amount of sugar, or use a substitute or whatever. Love this. Pinning! Visiting from Senior Salon Pit Stop linkup.

They were great. One problem though, you should put the weight of the kool aid pack so I can know what to buy. There’s like 3 different sizes. Also you should say the weight of the ice because it’s really hard to accurately measure ice, especially since different ice makers make different shapes.
I don’t know if you stay up to date with all of the comments, so I hope you see this eventually
