Many years ago, we used to garden every single year, it was one of my favorite times of year. Then, we hit a little bit of a bump in the road called life and ended up taking a few years off of our garden. This year though we are back at it and honestly I think I’m back in my happy place again as is my husband.
I’ll admit, I’m not a fan of digging in the dirt, but I do love picking the produce and cooking with it. This year, I did get my hands dirty and joined in planting with my mom and the kids. My husband is over the upkeep of the garden but I think I have all the fun inside making delicious food with that tasty produce. This year, we decided to do a joint effort with my parents to create our garden. We ended up doing 3 raised beds and have lots of veggies planted there. Of course, I have my favorites too. My all time favorite is growing okra. We LOVE okra and it’s so expensive or it seems to be at the store, so I enjoyed being able to make it right from the garden. I also freeze it too so that it will last throughout the year. My daughter can eat it like candy though so I may not have much leftover this year.
It was also fun that my kids were involved in planting, now the tricky part is that we may have things growing all over the place with the way they planted the seeds. I think it’s going to be quite a great learning experience for them as they see what they planted grow into delicious food. My son really enjoyed it and goes out there every single day now to see what has grown. He’s trying to be patient but he isn’t very patient…he may or may not get that from me. Not only do we have the garden but also our chickens, so I’m planning LOTS of food to be had from our backyard. Now, all I need are some cows and pigs, then we’d be set.
Are you gardening this year? I’ll be sharing garden updates frequently and then I’ll also be starting Garden Fresh Fridays soon as the produce starts to grow with new recipes using garden fresh goodies. I’m really hopeful that my lettuce comes up and that the fence protects it from the bunnies, I’m anxious for some salad with that lettuce. I can already taste it…
Now, have you started planting yet? I know some parts of the country it’s still too early, we are right on track though with it being in the 70s and 80s! I’m SO ready for summer too. Are you?
It’s time for some late nights and lazy mornings around here!
