In our family growing up, we had wonderful memories; however, sometimes the holidays were a little sad because the other half of our family lived 1,000 miles away in Michigan while we were in Oklahoma. Each year, my grandma would come visit us just in time for Christmas. She almost always stayed until summer because of the harsh northern winters.
I remember one particular year, my parents and my grandma co-conspired to give me a huge birthday surprise. She was going to show up! I absolutely LOVED my grandma and it always broke me to pieces when she had to go. Of course, this was in a time before Facetime and all the technological ways to stay connected.
I walked into my room after school that day, and went in to feed my fish in the fish tank when suddenly I saw something move out of the corner of my eye. I looked over at my bed and there was my grandma sitting there waiting on me. I was screaming for joy and crying at the same time! Meanwhile, my mom and my other grandma were standing in my doorway about to fall over each other trying to watch my reaction to seeing her there. She arrived just in time for my birthday and Christmas.
I only had a few more years after that with my grandma until she lost her fight with cancer, but those memories, they last lifetimes.
Each year Christmas and the holidays are hard without loved ones if they do not live nearby, but I was excited to see this video from Western Union. They teamed up with families and their customers to create home cooked meals that reminded them of their childhood and what they grew up on. Then, they surprised them with the meals along with bringing their families there via technology.
Western Union serves as a lifeline for their customers and connects them around the world.
A few heartfelt recipes that I remember the most about the holidays are Grandma’s Goop and Rainbow Sherbet Punch. These used to appear at every holiday gathering we went too, and I have distinct memories of being in the kitchen making these. This was done with my grandma who is still living and well. She loves that we keep these traditions going each year.
I still make these each year for my family, I love sharing these with my own kids now!
