First, the fur…the hair…the shedding. See all that hair on the back of her? That’s after being brushed. She looks about 20+ lbs heavier than she is because of all that fur that’s shedding…EVERYWHERE! I’m ready to shave her, I’ve heard people do shave labs, and I’m seriously considering it. It’s just too hot around here not to!
Now, what am I talking about today after getting that fur-ball story off my chest? Nudges Dog Treats plus keeping your pets safe around the 4th of July! How would you like a dog treat that’s made in the USA? Sign me up!
Did you know that the 4th of July is the height of when dogs run away from home? Why? They get scared! We have a 100+ lb lab and although she can slaughter critters that come in our backyard, she’s one of the most scared dogs I’ve ever met!
One of the ways we keep her calm on the 4th of July is by playing with her outside during all the activities and lots of times that includes treats! We recently tried out Nudges Dog Treats, which the best part to me is they are made in the USA! On top of that they tear easily so that you can use it based on the size treat your dog needs. They also are free of fillers, artificial flavors and they smell good! Really…they do smell good, really no strong scent at all!
Our dog loves to do tricks for treats, she used to be better at it a while back but she’s lost her patience these days. She still does pretty well though and likes to jump in the air to catch the treats mid air too!
Now, our dog is primarily an outside dog. Why? We have two small kids and she’s WAY bigger than they are and she can easily knock them down or hurt them when she thinks she’s playing. So, during the summer months though when here in Oklahoma it’s well into the 120’s or more…outside just isn’t an option! I mean it’s truly the dog days of summer but it’s too hot for the dogs!
We typically end up gating off part of our home and keeping her inside and outside for little spurts of time. She prefers outside and usually we are coaxing her to have her come inside. She likes to explore!
On the 4th of July though, we always let her inside early and she will gladly come in because as soon as those fireworks start going off, you can hear her howling for miles!
(Note: This pictures was taken about a year ago after her fur fully shed off…can’t you tell the difference?! This girl needs to loose that winter coat!)
A few tips for 4th of July Safety with your pets:
- Keep them inside or away from loud fireworks and shows.
- Remember to keep them away from outdoor cooking and supplies (lighter fluid, etc)
- Keep them away from oils, insect repellants, and sunscreens that may be toxic to animals.
- Keep food and drinks that aren’t safe for pets away from their reach as well.
- Keep them in their every day, normal surroundings. Take them on walks with the family or outside playing with the kids as usual.
We enjoyed time with her outside using Nudges Dog Treats to reinforce the training that our dog has learned over the years. One of our favorites is putting the treat just a few inches from her nose and practicing ‘leave it’ and ‘take it’…sometimes she just can’t take the temptation!

The speech bubbles are so cute! Love that Nudges dog treats are made in USA
Your May is such a cutie! I’ve heard that Labs shed a lot. Our Sherman is only 6 months old and this will be our first 4th of July with him. I plan to keep him safely inside because I really don’t know if the fireworks will scare him or not.
