Let’s get ready to plan summer with this Family Fun Summer Guide and summer items from Dollar General.
This post is sponsored by Dollar General; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Summer really does look a bit different for nearly all of us this year, but that does not mean it can’t be fun even if it’s spent right at home! The best summers as a kid, we spent at home simply coming up with creative ways to enjoy that sunshine right in our own backyard.
Now it’s time for you to do just that with your family right at home with items from Dollar General.
We live out in the country, and the closest store to us is Dollar General, it was recently remodeled too, so I was excited to go explore. It was actually the first time in a few months now that I’ve been out inside a store and it was refreshing.
Hosting a summer fun family night:
We decided to host a family backyard game night right out on our back patio. It was the perfect choice for our family as we enjoy being outside and that’s especially true in the summer months.
The plan is to make a great outdoor meal, some of your favorite barbecue or cookout foods then we had some water time and finished the evening with a card game!
The best part being we were able to purchase all of this at Dollar General, plus if you go on a Saturday you can use the Digital Coupons with the Dollar General App and save $5 off your purchase of $25 or more.

What should you eat for your family backyard game night?
We were able to pick up nearly all our food items right at Dollar General for our dinner.
The first thing on our menu were these Glazed Chicken Thighs turned into sandwiches with Clover Valley Buns and condiments. We paired these with baked beans that we were able to make using Bush’s Beans from Dollar General.
I was able to pick up everything I needed to make Baked Beans right at Dollar General too. I’ll share the full recipe for Baked Beans below too.
Next up, we picked up a variety bag of chips and of course the Patriot Pops too. I’ll admit we tried all three flavors, they were the perfect way to cool off, plus they just remind me of summer as a kid too!
Of course, since we have plans to do more of these events as we head into the 4th of July, we wanted to be sure to pick up some patriotic items.
My favorite are the mason jars that you can light to keep the bugs away! They are so festive and serve a purpose too. The kid’s favorite was the Patriot Pops. They absolutely loved those, those are what I remember about summer all the cold treats.
What type of game night should you have for a Backyard Family Game Night?
We decided to do a variety of games starting with wet games first with the water slide and the water guns.
I was able to pick up enough water guns for the entire family so we had a great water gunfight and the kids loved the water slide.
Once everyone gets nice and tired of all the water fun, it’s the perfect time to sit around a table on the patio and enjoy a card game. Dollar General has plenty to choose from, but we went with our personal favorite, Uno.
Now that you know how to host a family backyard game night, it’s time to head over to Dollar General and stock up on all you need for the perfect evening with your family.
