That’s about 800 lbs of top soil, not only for our garden but flower beds too! We’ve got some work to do! Next week, I’ll show you our planted garden, this week I had to show the herb garden because that is my favorite part!
I love cooking with fresh herbs, which means this is my favorite part of the garden…the fresh herbs. I plant my herb garden right on the ledge of my back porch. My husband has bolted down some planters for me there. This seemed to work perfectly last year, since I was able to easily walk outside, trim some herbs and cook with them!
I was excited to see a few sprouts this week!
What was I not excited to see as I watered them? ANTS! If there is one thing I HATE, it’s ANTS!
I told my husband shortly after we moved into this house that I think it was built on an ant hill! Literally, thousands of ant hills in our yard, even our exterminator was shocked! We noticed it all throughout the neighborhood so maybe it is the fact the soil is so moist in our area.
Nevertheless, their lives were short because it was baby powder to the rescue! Yes, baby powder…it’s my weapon of choice. It works wonders and it is not toxic!
Now, I’m heading back out to check up on my herbs and water, then next week stay tuned for our planted garden!
Happy Gardening Sunday!

If you don’t use chemicals on your yard and garden, beneficial nematodes will kill the ants. Also, sprinkling dry molasses (found at the feed store or organic garden center) will kill ants. As a last resort, orange oil will do them in, but it also kills your grass and/or your plants.
I hate ants too! Last year they were all over my garden, although luckily they didn’t harm any of my plants. Good luck with your herb garden–I love growing fresh herbs to cook with too!
how do you use the baby powder to kill them? we live on about 15 giant ant hills and ive gotten the numbers down to maybe half as many ants but we still have millions outside and i dont dare leave anything on the counter more than 5 minutes:S
I sprinkle it around their trail or wherever they are coming from. The powder suffocates their lungs and they die. If they even smell a trace of it they won’t come back. This year though I used it along with Terro ant killers.
You can, for instance, mix plants with strong flower power with plants that
have spectacular foliage. When a person starts living in a new house, generally,
some planting will have already been accomplished.
If you choose a fountain that is too big for your garden it will
dominate the area and eclipse your entire garden.
