If you love a good Big Mac and want to make something with a twist on your favorite burger, try this Big Mac Tater Tot Casserole. This is certainly a tasty dinner, but it’s also a great dish to take for a potluck.

This is definetly not a diet friendly recipe, so if you are looking for a diet friendly recipe, this one isn’t it…but if you want flavor and a fun twist on a common burger, you’ve stopped at the right place!

This recipe take a classic tater tot casserole and adds Big Mac Sauce to it along with a few other seasonings to make a flavorful casserole. If you want to make this gluten-free, you will use Thousand Island Dressing instead of Big Mac Sauce.
Can you make this recipe gluten-free?

Big Mac Tater Tot Casserole can be made gluten-free by using Thousand Island Dressing. This will be used in place of the Big Mac Sauce. Remember to check all ingredients you use to be sure they are free of cross-contamination.
Tips for Making Big Mac Tater Tot Casserole:

This dish can be made with Big Mac sauce from McDonald’s OR you can use Thousand Island Dressing.

Ground Beef or Ground Chuck will be used along with Frozen Tater Tots. These ingredients will be combined with seasonings right in the pantry to make a flavorful dish.
If you prefer, you can substitute ground beef for ground turkey or ground chicken to make a lighter version.

It’s best to use a 9×13 pan to pour the mixture into and then the frozen tater tots will be placed on top of the mixture.
We have found this cooks best in the oven at 400 degrees F for 45 minutes. The key is that the tater tots are golden brown and crispy to the touch.

What should you serve with Big Mac Tater Tot Casserole?
This recipe pairs well with roasted vegetables, green beans, or salad.
Variations of this casserole:

- Make it Spicy – Use spicy cheese like Pepper Jack or add Hot Sauce to the ground beef.
- Make it Kid-Friendly – Add bacon bits to the ground beef mixture.
- Make it Deluxe – Add sauteed onions and mushrooms into the beef mixture along with crumbled bacon.
How do you store the leftovers?
Leftover Big Mac Tater Tot Casserole can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
When ready to serve it, re-warm it in the microwave on a microwave-safe plate for 1-2 minutes or in a heat-proof bowl in the air fryer at 350 degrees F for 4-5 minutes.
If you choose to use the air fryer this will help crisp the tater tots again.

Big Mac Tater Tot Casserole
Ingredients
- 2 Tbsp Olive Oil
- 1/2 Cup Diced Red Onion
- 2 Lbs Ground Beef
- 1 Tbsp Onion Powder
- 1 Tbsp Garlic Powder
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1 tsp Ground Black Pepper
- 1 Cup Shredded Colby Jack
- 3/4 Cup Burger Sauce (Big Mac Sauce or Thousand Island) See Note
- 1/4 Cup Sweet Dill Relish
- 1/4 Cup Sour Cream
- 6 Slices Colby Jack Cheese
- 32 oz Bag of Frozen Tater Tots
Toppings
- Lettuce
- Tomato
- Onion
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F.
- Spray a 9×13 baking dish with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.
- Using a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add in the onions and cook until the onions are translucent.
- Add the ground beef, using a heat-proof spoon, break into bite sizes.
- Sprinkle with onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix up and cook until the ground beef is no longer pink.
- Add the shredded Colby Jack, Big Mac sauce, relish, and sour cream. Mix over low heat until all the ingredients are combined and the cheese has melted.
- Pour the mixture into the prepared 9×13 baking dish, spread evenly.
- Place the cheese slices on top.
- Add the frozen tater tots in a single layer to cover the entire dish.
- Bake uncovered in the oven for 40-45 minutes or until the tater tots are golden brown and crispy to the touch.
- Cool for 5 minutes and add toppings.
- Serve.
