Are Your Kids Old Enough to Pack Their Own Lunch? Today, I’m Sharing 5 Ways to Help Teach Kids to Pack Their Lunch.
Now that school is back in full swing for most of the country, I’m sure many of you are also packing lunches each day for the kids. We are definitely back to packing lunches and this year, I’m allowing my son a little more freedom to pack his own lunch. I have found that if you start when they are little, they can really get the hang of how to pack a good lunch, as they get older. My daughter already has started helping as well so that hopefully in a few years, she’ll be able to pack her own lunch too. I wanted to let you know though these 5 Ways to Pack a Lunch.
I actually remember as a kid, I never seemed to pack a decent lunch. It really did affect me too, as far as eating habits are concerned. I’ve tried to be sure my kids know the parameters of what they need in their lunch and along the way I’ve found a few tips that really help. One thing I’ve learned is that the kids really enjoy a little treat and Welch’s Fruit Snacks are the perfect option for that. They boast 100% of the Vitamin C needed in a day and 25% Vitamins A and E. Fruit is also the first ingredient, which I happen to love, plus they are super delicious. I even keep them in my purse for a little snack in between school and home, we have quite a drive to get home each day.
5 Ways to Help Teach Kids to Pack Their Lunch
- Bento Box – A key for packing lunches is to use a bento box. Each compartment can assist in helping children know that they need different types of foods. For instance, there is an area for a protein, vegetable, fruit, grain, and Welch’s Fruit Snacks too. We stock up each year with new bento boxes specifically for school lunches.
- Packing Area – In the fridge, a great way to help kids make good choices, is to have a little area of lunchbox foods. This can also be created in the pantry for dry goods as well. This can include cheese sticks, yogurts, applesauce, and other fruits or vegetables.
- Serving Sizes – It’s a good idea to be sure to stick to servings sizes. One way to do this and let them pack their lunches is to divide up any large bags of pretzels or dry goods into snack bag sizes. Simply purchase snack bags that seal and portion them out. Then, just add to your packing station and they can grab just the right amount.
- Start Young – Start teaching them how at a young age, even at age 4, you can let them pick out foods from the packing station and then put them in their lunchbox, providing assistance along the way.
- Guide Them – Be sure to allow them to pick and choose what they would like for lunch, because we all have a certain idea of what sounds good to us and kids are just the same. It’s necessary to oversee what they are packing, but guide them instead of questioning their choices.
These are super simple tips, but when your child heads into those later elementary years, you’ll enjoy that they can pack a great lunch with little help. It allows the kids to have more responsibility and learn good choices too.
What tips would you add? Have you started letting your kids have a little more say in their lunch?
