Gardening: Herbs & The Garden Box

Garden Box

A few weeks back we showed you how we were making an easy garden box and how you can do the same!

Our garden box turned out really well simply by using some scrap wood.  The only problem was I wanted it to look somewhat pretty and colorful.

I have been on this yellow kick lately, so we had some leftover yellow paint that I decided to use to paint our garden box.  I wasn’t really out to make it perfect since the wood itself was not perfect.  It turned out very cute though!

We started off with this mismatched garden box that we used various pieces of wood to put it together.  I had high hopes to make it look pretty plus add some delicious herbs in it!

Viola!  We have a yellow garden box complete with some rich soil!

Next up, we had to add the herbs.  I added some basil, dill weed, parsley and chives.  I have never done chives before so I’m interested to see how those grow.

I also noticed in my already planted herb box, I have lots of growth as far as the cilantro goes!  Now, I just need some tomatoes to grow so I can start making my homemade salsa!

Of course, I take any chance I can get to show you our kids.  I had to show pictures today of our garden helpers!  So far the hardest part about getting out in the garden is being able to work hands free since my daughter is currently in a wanting to be held or upright 99% of the time phase.  It wears this mommy out!

Luckily, she has found a new love for this bouncer and is content sitting in it and watching us.

My son of course loves to help out in the garden and play with anything outside that he can.  I am foreseeing a summer full of long summer nights…my favorite!  (…and a lot of baths for this little boy!)

Next week, we will be sharing another tip plus showing how our garden is coming along!  So far, we’ve already picked green onions and lettuce…time for some growth!

I planted my stuff inside and it grew pretty quickly except the cilantro (funny enough). I have to start transfering things outside but I need some sort of covering to protect from all the animals so that I get to eat some of the stuff. I really need to get it made quickly or things aren’t going to make it. Do you have any problems with anything getting into your plants??

Yes! We have a chicken wire style fence around our garden. Luckily, we have a huge dog that keeps some of the animals out but we live with a green belt behind us so we have a ton of critters that get in our yard from that. It’s always a struggle. We try to pick everything before they have a chance!
