Sugar Cookies

I mentioned previously that cookies are my weakness, then I found this picture.  It started young!

To get my cookie fix, I set out to make Christmas sugar cookies, and I fully intended to have nice Christmas shapes with perfect icing decorations.  However, staying real I am ‘Mommy Hates Cooking’, which means I am still learning.

In saying that, I learned after making this that the dough needs to be very flat or the cookies will fluff up and rise making them irregularly large shapes.  I am also sure the applesauce I used did not help the fluff factor!

Fully knowing that I am still learning, I also used part of the dough to make simple drop cookies.  These turned out pretty and tasted amazing!

I used the Soft Christmas Cookies recipe, which happens to be a fabulous recipe.  I did substitute 1/2 of the butter for applesauce to at least make myself feel like I was saving calories.

I will be trying these again soon, taking what I learned and making cute Christmas shapes.  In the meantime, I’m going to eat all of these lovely drop cookies!

I don’t know how to stop the fluffing up, but I like softer cookies when I make chocolate chip or peanut butter…a good trick to get softer cookies is to add 1/2 cup extra flour than the recipe calls for…just fyi for future cookie making!
And yes, I know applesauce instead of oil works well for cakes/breads, but not so sure of cookies…sure it changes them a bit!
